Alchemy Partners - Case study
Alchemy Partners is a private equity firm who is based in Central London. Alchemy Partners has worked with Wizard for over 25 years. Wizard has assisted Alchemy throughout the years with its migrations to new systems as well as keeping the firm up to date with the latest security technologies
Â
Alchemy Partners has around 30 employees and has now chosen to offer its team a flexible working environment due to changes following the COVID-19 pandemic
Alchemy Partners had an on-premises server running Hyper-V which ran multiple virtual machines including roles like Active Directory, File Services, SQL & RDS
Â
During the pandemic, working from home became more common and Alchemy was looking to implement a solution that allows better collaboration and files access from any location, without the required use of a remote desktop or VPN

Alchemy Partners already had its emails hosted on Microsoft Office 365 and was familiar with how OneDrive and its file-sharing options worked. Wizard suggested Alchemy take full advantage of the Microsoft Office 365 solution and utilize Microsoft SharePoint to replace its traditional file server. OneDrive would then be used for personal files
Moving away from the firm’s on-premises infrastructure, Wizard still recommended a local domain controller to manage the machine securities, group policies and logs. The solution for this was to build a virtual machine hosted in Microsoft Azure, a fully cloud-based system
Wizard ensured all machines could communicate with the local domain controller by configuring a permanent S2S VPN connection from its head office to Alchemy Partners’ Microsoft Azure environment
Alchemy Partners also had hosted applications that needed to be installed on a Windows Server operating system. With no on-premises servers, Wizard built another virtual machine in Azure which was configured as an application server and the applications were migrated to this
Summary:

Microsoft SharePoint has a lot of benefits. One of its key features is the ability to access files from any location with no requirement for a VPN. Files can also be synced to allow for offline accessibility
Â
This benefited Alchemy Partners greatly and made working from different locations a lot easier. There were no longer risks associated with working from one location, such as internet or power outages. The VPN was also blocked from public networks, ensuring security
Â
The SharePoint environment that was configured was a single main SharePoint site with multiple subsites for the different departments; Admin, Finance, etc. The benefit of having multiple subsites lies in allowing better permission management where users only need to sync the subsites that they require to their machines
Â
The solution also allows for all security groups to be migrated to Microsoft SharePoint to ensure permissions are retained
Â
Microsoft SharePoint syncing uses the OneDrive for Business application to sync data and keep all files in the cloud. It then downloads them locally when accessed. Users can also set all directories or individual directories to be downloaded so they are accessible offline
Â
Microsoft SharePoint collaboration allows your whole team to work on one document at the same time and provides live updates so edits can be viewed instantly. This benefited Alchemy in allowing its team members to work together more efficiently when they were out of office
Â
Microsoft SharePoint uses the same security configuration that is set within your Microsoft Office 365 accounts. Alchemy Partners has conditional access policies to ensure that only trusted devices can access Microsoft Office 365 resources. The firm also has multi-factor authentication enabled. This makes it more secure than just a standard VPN and a traditional on-premises file server

Wizard recommended Microsoft Azure as the hosting platform for Alchemy Partners’ servers. Microsoft Azure is a subscription-based solution where the costs are calculated based on users and the specification of the machine required. Due to the low demand of servers they needed, this was more cost-effective than purchasing an on-premise server
Â
Alchemy Partners also benefited from the Microsoft Azure solution as it meant all servers were accessible from any location with a VPN connection. This enhanced their disaster recovery plan and reduced their overheads

Alchemy Partners had always used a local active directory. Typically, Wizard would recommend moving to Azure Active Directory, but we determined that this did not provide the full security that they needed for their user accounts
Â
Instead, Wizard created a hybrid approach which joined all endpoints with Azure Active Directory. This allows us to sync them to Azure but retain management of the security features and policies through the Active Directory policy
Â
Migrating the Active Directory server to Microsoft Azure meant all user accounts remained the same so there was no change to the user’s local profiles on their endpoints. This was a key benefit for Alchemy to ensure everything still felt the same for their employees

Alchemy uses a variety of third-party applications that rely on Windows server and Microsoft SQL to run, increasing its overhead costs. To reduce expenses, we recommended migrating these applications to the cloud, which proved to be significantly cost-effective. Additionally, we conducted speed tests prior to migration to verify that the applications would perform swiftly over the VPN
By migrating to Microsoft Azure for its application needs, Alchemy enhanced its disaster recovery strategies. Should any issue arise at its head office, the critical applications that its users depend on would remain accessible and unaffected, allowing smooth remote access from any location via a VPN connection to the Azure network

By providing this service to Alchemy Partners, we were able to convert its server infrastructure to a fully cloud-based solution. This ensured that its users could access all of the files, applications, and services they needed from any location with an internet connection, whilst improving its disaster recovery plans, reducing its overheads, and maintaining high levels of security
